Watchdogs hits out at Google privacy controls

Google has a ‘disappointing disregard’ for safeguarding private information about its users, according to the privacy watchdogs of 10 countries.

Britain’s Information Commissioner, Chris Graham, and his counterparts in Canada, France, Germany and Italy were among the signatories to a letter sent to the search giant.

In the letter to Google’s chief executive, Eric Schmidt, they said there had been lack of regard for privacy in the way the company had delivered both its Street View mapping service and its Buzz social networking site, which was conceived as a rival Facebook.

They called on Google to lay out how it would meet concerns about its use of public data in the future, alleging that it had violated the fundamental principle that individuals ‘should be able to control the use of their personal information’.
