Businesses urgently need to upgrade to IPv6, a new version of the internet’s addressing protocol that will hugely increase the number of available addresses.

A survey, conducted by the European Commission, found that few companies are prepared for the switch from the current naming protocol, IPv4, to the new regime, IPv6. Web experts have warned that we could run out of internet addresses within the next two years unless more companies migrate to the new platform.

The IPv4 and IPv6 protocols refer to the way in which web addresses are created and assigned. Each website has a unique IP address, represented by a string of numbers, such as 192.168.1.1, which are then given a user-friendly web address, such as telegraph.co.uk, to make them easier to remember.

The IPv4 protocol uses 32-bit addresses, which enables the web to support around 4.3 billion unique addresses. By contrast, IPv6 uses 128-bit web addresses, creating billions of possible new web addresses – experts estimate it could assign a unique address for every blade of grass on the planet.

Yes and if whole swathes of the ip addresses weren’t set aside for the us military it would last hundreds of years more as it is.
Lave a look at who has what addresses and most us army bases have a bigger allocation of IP addresses than whole regions of the plant.
Why does a single army base require even 1/256ths of the internet, but some have more.
Reassign these, they can’t possibly be use by GI Doh!

If people would stop assigning class B and C networks for an office with 2 people might help as well. IP managment is the answer not doom and gloom. Does a company with 2 people need a class B address (65534 hosts?) I am sure that this is an exception not the rule but none the less. Over the years of looking at networking, customers are more willing to through a class C address space because they don’t want to worry about subnetting… not that hard people networking 101… IPV6 is not going to save us because until IP managment is better controlled, the same issue will occur… more addressess = bigger address spaces assigned…. just my opinion

I have an urgent message for you, more important than any message you can hear. God is Holy and cannot accept sin(honor thy mother and father…, thou shall not kill, thou shall not commit adultery, thou shall not steal, thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor, thou shall not covet..etc…Exodus 20:12-17). It is a horrible and terrible place of everlasting torment that people will go because of their sins.

But God has provided a way for each to escape the lake of fire. He sent his Son Jesus(God manifest in the flesh-1 Timothy 3:16) who was conceived by a virgin by the Holy Spirit of God,lived a sinless life, and suffered a horrible death/shed blood and rose again 3 days later to take the penalty of YOUR sins so you dont have to pay for them in hell for eternity! He loved you so much which is why he did it! He is the only one to have fufilled the law perfectly(sinless) and paid the price of the entire world’s sins so that man could be saved on the merits of His perfection(see Romans 5:19). All you must do to be saved is BELIEVE in Him(trust in Him to save you as a sinner). You must admit your lost sinful condition to Him/that you’re worthy of hell, and ask Him to save you by placing complete trust in Jesus ALONE for salvation(an example in the Word of someone doing this- “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” Luke 18:13).It is not even partly by yourselves that you can be saved, but only by the merits of Jesus Christ!

“For God so loved the world, He sent his only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life” John 3:16.

“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” 1 John 2:2

“…Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,” Revelation 1:5

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

For death comes when we least expect it! Make sure you are saved TODAY! The Bible condemns the rich, the wealthy, and those who take advantage of the poor, so it CANNOT have been made up by the elite. Because the Word clearly CONDEMNS people such as those! It declares all mankind as sinners(myself included).

With VLSM and CIDR there can`t be that much to worry about. I mean what are the chances
of your waiting more than a few seconds for an address?.
Plus there are a number of systems which are and will continue to be reluctant to take up full
v6 implementation.

Many websites cease to exist because they were not making any money. Those websites are available for others. Considering the economic crisis – many people have relinquished their control over those websites – so there is greater chance of more website being available for others to use.

Dude, we are not talking about Web HTTP address here, we are talking about TCP/IP numerical address. A Web address is link on a IP but many web address can stand on one IP. this is not the same thing. for your first lesson, click on start -> run -> cmd.exe and write “ping google.com”.

It’s not so much about what values you use to represent the underlying binary data, and more about how much binary data there is.

IPv4 uses 32 bits (binary digits) for each address. The way we represent that data is 4 octets, or 4 groups of 8 bits, and then in decimal form. For the address 192.168.1.1 you would have the following binary

11000000 10101000 00000001 00000001

You could use just 4 letters in an 8 bit character encoding to represent the same data.

IPv6 is respresenting the data in a different way, but that’s not the reason it’s fixing the problem, it’s fixing it because there’s more bits. 128 bits. Instead of representing an address as decimal numbers seperated by dots, addresses use hexadecimal (base 16) digits, in groups of 4, seperated by colons. Base 16 numbers use the digits from 0 to 9 and the letters A to F. Each hexadecimal digit also conveniently maps directly to 4 binary digits. This means each IPv6 address is 32 hexidecimal digits in length. However, not all these digits need to be displayed. In each group of 4, leading 0’s can be left off. In multiple consecutive groups of 4 0’s, you can leave all the groups out and replace it with a double colon. This means the localhost address (an address that means your computer) which is in full

0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 (which would be 127 0s and then a 1 in binary)

can be shortened to

::1

For each pair of groups of 4 hexadecimal digits, you are reperesenting the same number of binary digits as in an IPv4 address.

The point is, it’s not how you represent the information that is important, but how much information there is. In terms of IP addresses, it’s not how you represent the address, but how many bits you have in each address.
