There is as yet no proof that Syrian government forces have used chemical weapons against the opposition, Western intelligence services say.
Over the last two weeks, opposition forces have claimed that chemical weapons have been used against them dozens of times. In some of these cases, video footage purportedly shows the hospitalized victims of chemical attacks.
The claims of chemical attacks have attracted enormous international attention and added to the already vocal criticism of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, whose brutal war against the opposition has killed more than 40,000 people, including many thousands of civilians.
Yet an analysis of the footage by Western intelligence agencies, combined with additional intelligence data, has produced no real proof that chemical weapons have been used.
