Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward revealed to Larry King last night that the U.S. has embarked on a “secret killing program” in Iraq which has dramatically reduced attacks on coalition troops by wiping out terrorists, but what could this secret weapon possibly be?
A CNN report details Woodward’s revelations.
The program — which Woodward compares to the World War II era Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb — must remain secret for now or it would “get people killed,” Woodward said Monday on CNN’s Larry King Live.
“The top secret operations will “some day in history … be described to people’s amazement,” Woodward told King.
While he would not reveal the details, Woodward said the terrorists who have been targeted were already aware of the capabilities.
“The enemy has a heads up because they’ve been getting wiped out and a lot of them have been killed,” he said. “It’s not news to them.”
For the weapon to be comparable to the atomic bomb, one would speculate that it must employ some kind of exotic new technology and is potentially related to neutron bomb and electromagnetic weapons research.
As far back as 2002, a Cox News Service report entitled Super-Secret Microwave Weapons May Be Used In Iraq, speculated that the military was preparing to utilize high-powered microwave weapons that send bursts of electromagnetic energy which completely disable enemy electronic devices.

However, Woodward’s discussion of the secret weapon wiping out alleged terrorists in large numbers suggests it may be a far more barbaric device than an EMP weapon, which would more traditionally be used against standing armies rather than scattered insurgents.
One possibility is that the weapon is something similar that described to film maker Patrick Dillon by Iraqi infantryman Majid al-Ghazali – a frightening giant flame-thrower type device that instead shoots out “concentrated lightning bolts” or radiation bursts that result in vehicles and people being almost literally liquidized.
During a street battle in Baghdad on April 12 2003, Al-Ghazali describes witnessing American troops unveil an oddly configured tank which “suddenly let loose a blinding stream of what seemed like fire and lightning, engulfing a large passenger bus and three automobiles.”
“Within seconds the bus had become semi-molten, sagging “like a wet rag” as he put it. He said the bus rapidly melted under this withering blast, shrinking until it was a twisted blob about the dimensions of a VW bug. As if that were not bizarre enough, al-Ghazali explicitly describes seeing numerous human bodies shriveled to the size of newborn babies. By the time local street fighting ended that day, he estimates between 500 and 600 soldiers and civilians had been cooked alive as a result of the mysterious tank-mounted device.”
Al-Ghazali adds that following the battle, U.S. troops were scrupulous about burying the evidence of the weapon’s deadly consequences, but that telltale signs remained which he showed to journalist Dillon.
Dillon, a battlefield medic in Vietnam, Somalia and Kosovo, stated, “I’ve seen a freaking smorgasbord of destruction in my life, flame-throwers, napalm, white phosphorous, thermite, you name it. I know of nothing short of an H-bomb that conceivably might cause a bus to instantly liquefy or that can flash broil a human body down to the size of an infant. God pity humanity if that thing is a preview of what’s in store for the 21st century.”

Aid workers and others have backed up reports of terrifying new weapons systems being deployed that cause horrific injuries and agonizing deaths. Woodward’s characterization of the victims merely as “terrorists” conceals the fact that a great number of the victims of these brutal weapons are no doubt innocent people caught up in the fighting.

I’ve known & reported & sent e-mails of these horrific & illegal weapons systems. They are against the Geneva Convention. For over a year now. They were first reported in the patriot community websites on “Rense.com,” years ago. They are a combination of electro-magnetic & scalar technology. Based on a variation of Tesla’s designs. They do indeed liquify metal cars, buses, buildings, & instantly cook people alive. A horrible, evil, death ! It would be a matter of days when the freedom fighters alias insurgents will find a way grab this ’secret weapon’ and use on US forces. The same is happening in Afghanistan. Most of the tanks and other heavy equipment have been snatched by the Taliban and are using them against coaliation force. The ridiculous uniform which the US soldiers wear, packed with hardware has been taken. Capturing the soldier with the radio is enough to completely confuse coalition forces leading them into deadly booby traps.

I think the “secret” weapons are ABLs( Airborne Lasers) such as the Boeing YAL-1 & ATLs (Advanced Tactical Lasers). Boeing successfully tested a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) with, a 20 kilometer range, mounted in a C-130H gunship that hit a 3×3 target on Aug 13th 2008. Smaller ABL’s were developed earlier. I would think we’re using them to incinerate people who are considered high value targets.

In the 1992 Film “Panama Deception”, they briefly covered how numerous bodies were found after the invasion of Panama that looked like they had been “melted”, with no signs of high temperatures, like charring, or blackening, just melted into a “goopy” state. By claiming the new weapon is a science fictional technological device, I think you may be playing into the Pentagon’s propaganda to divert attention from the real weapon being used with such success in Iraq: people.
I think this new weapon is simply called “The Activity”, a group of 200-250 super covert military intelligence types who are very skilled at tracking down targets and then very quickly sending in SAS, Delta and SEAL DEVGRU operators to kill or capture them.
The Activity has racked up an impressive record. This group has systematically reduced the leadership ranks of the Iraqi insurgency. Some stories have leaked out of Iraq about the heavy losses suffered by special operations forces. These losses stem from the very vigorous prosecution of the insurgency leadership by The Activity.
The idea is that if you strike the shepherd hard enough, the sheep will scatter. And they do.
It remains to be seen whether The Activity can find similar success in a super low-tech environment like Afghanistan. Already the Pentagon is expanding its operations into Pakistan, and may be doing so based on better targeting intelligence provided by The Activity.
I personally do not support the Bush policies in any way, but I certainly do give my respect for supreme competence. Under better national leadership, units like The Activity can be a quiet force for good.

There was also a new vehichle introduced in this war called a stryker. The Iraqis told tales how the cage armor that surrounded it flipped up and the vehicle could fly off into the air. If you took a LED mini-light and held at them and told them it was a truth detector they would believe you. Actually I have a good idea what is being employed. I’m not going to say anything because sometimes, not most of the time or anything like that, but sometimes for short periods of time it’s good to keep secrets. Okay folks basic physics. To melt the steel structure of a bus and drive off all the water from the bodies of the passengers requires a huge input of energy. This energy comes from the weapon which in turn is pumped by a power supply which has to deliver the energy to the weapons which then delivers it to the target. Energy is conserved, in other words all the energy delivered to the target has to come from somewhere. For a car this is fuel, for a tank round the energy comes from the large explosive charge in the brass canister in back of the round. Look up tank rounds on the net and you’ll see how much larger the propellant portion of a round is than the weapon which delivers the energy to the target. For a directed energy weapon the energy has to be delivered in a very controlled manner which implies electricity. Electrical conversion is not 100% effective. So the power supply must provide MORE energy than is delivered to the target and must avoid destroying itself in the process. Back to the tank round example. The tank round destroys itself while pumping the weapon with the needed energy. It’s unlikely that any power supply pumping a weapon capable of melting a bus would not melt the carrier vehicle and would probably drain the fuel tank many times over while firing the load. The radiator on the weapons carrier would have to be huge to dump the waste heat from such a device. If this weapon is real there’s about three Nobel Prizes in Physics for the designers.

I work for a steel company and I can personally say that I’ve seen laser cutting technology go from refrigerator sized lasers down to CNC/Robot laser combo’s that are about the size of a kid’s bicycle, all the way down to what we use now which have more cutting power and are the size of a soldering iron. May we all not forget that the military is fifty years ahead of the common market AT LEAST! I am a VN veteran too, brooklyn guy. Had I educated myself a little more about war and what causes it, I would not have been a veteran. I’m sure there are also good Congress people who disagree with the Bush administration but the majority voted for war. The majority of police and soldiers have no idea what they are defending or not. They just do it without thinking. Every soldier takes the OATH. I’m not sure about cops, but they should. That OATH is Sacred. Our allegiance is not with the flag but the Constitution. I never stand or put my hand over my heart for the Pledge anymore because my allegience is not with ANY government but with the one document that has kept us on top of the world until 2001. Once it was determined to be just a God damn peice of paper by the Bush administration, I knew there were traitors in the house.

What you are calling a power supply for your cutting laser is a power converter. You are forgetting that the power supply is the power plant which is the size of a large office building with a massive radiator of waste heat called a smoke stack and weighs many thousands of tones. It delivers it’s energy to you via many thousands of tones of infrastructure called the power grid. Also your laser cutters are delivering energy to very small sections of metal and making use of the thermal resistance of heat flow in the work material to ensure that the entire plate does not need to be heated in order to make the cut. The laser only has to heat the local cut area to vaporization and feed the flow of heat to the surrounding materials. If you are going to melt the whole thing, you need to deliver enough energy to do the whole thing. So a typical cutting torch is ~100kw and makes a cut into steel about 1 cm^2 in a second or two. There are a lot of square cm’s on the frontal cross section of a bus…… This thing would have to either drag a high tension power cable behind it to the local coal plant, or several tankers full of fuel and then several special radiators. It would be convoy of vehicles over a city block long. I’m reminded of the 80’s and 90’s when DOD wanted to replace tank rounds with EM weapons. The tank had to tow it’s weapons generator behind it. All sides of the generator were covered in radiator surface.

Precarious333 you don’t understand where the energy is coming from. HHO is just a mix of gaseous oxygen and hydrogen. When H2 adn O2 burn you get one of the hottest chemical fires you can get. You can get hotter with H2 F (Flourine) and O2. H2 cannot be mined, it must be made and that takes ENERGY. More energy than you get out of it. Typical H2 stripping techniques from water are only %20 efficient. In other words of the energy you pump into a H2 generator, only 20% goes into getting the desired effect. That lump of brass never goes molten in the vid and represents a SMALL fraction of the mass of a bus. Even the high energy of the torch requires a non trivial period of time to get that brass to glow, imagine trying to do that to over 5000 lbs of metal all at once! As mentioned in the interview by Woodward this should be a process to locate and detect leaders of the enemies an insugents, which are then in a second step killed by US killing teams. I assume that this is a method of computer and satelite aided search known also as “Rasterfahndung”.
A very crude description: First you have a set of many special qualities or attributes or behaivior these people should have other people have not. Such a set may include 50 properties and they are detected by satelite and measured by computer programs. One property could be: the daily number of contacts with other male people or groups of peoples in private homes(should be higher because of meetings). By sat and computer programs it is possible to recognize people i.e. the way you walk is fingerprintlike characteristic for you and to calculate risk numbers for every item of the set. An mathematic algorithm is giving out a number as calculated “suspicioncy”.

The US keeps trying to force the people into submission with the most barbaric weapons. It will not work other than against themselves. For every freedom fighter and civilian killed two will stand up and fight the US. Their victory will come with the collapse of the USA, which has begun in 2001, on September 11.

I just love the “determined people defending their country” line (Alexander Baldal Sept 11). So often used by terrorist sympathisers, it doesn’t matter that 90% (or is it 95%?) of the “freedom fighters” killed in Iraq are NOT Iraqis…for lefties they are still defending their country. Go figure!!
But let’s apply the logic elswhere; oppression/murder/torture/rape is allowed, so long as one is a native of the country being oppressed. ie an Iraqi tyrant/fanatic and his sycophantic supporters have every right to murder his/her fellow Iraqis….this is fighting for freedom. Let’s apply it to WWII Italy, for example.
OK. Mussolini was Italian. The invading Allies were NOT. When Il Duce saw the writing on the wall, he fled, but was evntually captured by other Italians and strung up. His fascist friends (Italian and German; let’s call them freedom fighters as they wanted an Italy free for THEM to terrorise) tried to hold on to power but were crushed. All decent Italians rejoiced…most still do. sound like another country starting with “I”

Allow me to do a little speculation:
The actual answer is relatively mundane and very frightening at the same time. It’s a synthetic aperture radar that can “see” through most common roofing and wall material and can create an image which looks a lot like a side-scan sonar but sharper due to the shorter wavelength. The kicker, and this is the important thing, is large/dense/angular metallic objects like heavy weapons and fragmentation bombs show up as very bright spots and are thus easy to spot. You can fly over a village and see which huts and barns contain large weapons, and once confirmed by a secondary method (boots on the ground or arial surveillance) a missile is fired and people die. Normally, they wait until there are a maxima of people in the building before firing as normally these people aren’t stupid enough to sleep in these places — this is where the loiter time of the predator comes in. There’s a lot of fancy software to filter out false targets and to keep a running inventory of the contents of homes, which for example can tell the user when weapons are being marshalled in advance of an attack. The system is also good for spotting many types of IED as traditional camoflage is useless against penetrating radar, and it can also spot enemy sentries armed with AKs or RPGs — so much so that this job is highly undesirable with the local gentry.
Another portion of this sensor fusion is integration with long-term, wide area IR monitoring. It basically shows you a trail where any human has walked — the more people who have walked the path, the brighter the color. Various visualization options are available, including one where the paths decay over time. Operationally, if you are following a gomer on the ground, and he lingers in an area which is featureless but shows multiple human tracks, then it’s likely an underground weapons cache hidden under a rock or camel shit or whatever. Then the bombs come flying in.
So far, so good. The problem is going to be that (1) the gomers will start using metal sheets in walls and roofs which make imaging less effective (but it still penetrates; how exactly is the big secret); and (2) it won’t be long before the FBI is “experimenting” with the building-penetrating radar, basically flying a grid over US cities looking for clandestine drug labs, large weapon caches, and anything else that seems deviant to them. They will create a database of homes, and create a census of how many humans live in them, how many weapons they seem to have, and whether they have a hydroponic garden in the spare bedroom. No warrant is required as there are court decisions already which say that busting pot growers based on their homes’ infrared signature is hunky-dory. Most American homes have wood/stucco walls and wood or tile roofs, which are easily penetrated by the modern systems. Note that they only need to see through *either* the walls or the roof, so it doesn’t help you if only one is shielded.
Now it’s really time to put on the tinfoil hats!

Why not just full continuous 24/7 UAV video coverage digitally stored. Get a Nice big rewind button so you can backtrack any single event to its source then ffwd the divergent tracks to find other combatants. Lots of car bombs trying to get into the compounds and lots of known bad guy areas so you don’t have to footprint too many areas.

I believe he is talking about the much ballyhooed (in defense geek circles) “Tagging, Tracking and Locating” [TTL] program… These are newfangled technologies designed to track people from long distances, without the targeted people realizing they are being tracked. That can theoretically include thermal signatures, or some sort of “taggant” placed on a person. Think Will Smith in Enemy of the State. Well, not so many cameras, maybe.
Why do I think this is the technology Woodward is referring to? Well, first, because it pretty much fits the bill, in terms of the type of capability he appears to be talking about. It has involvement from a number of players, including the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency and Special Operations Command. Also, the Defense Science Board has talked about this capability in similar terms, saying “the global war on terrorism cannot be won without a ‘Manhattan Project’-like TTL … program.”

How could this be a secret if its been on tv and researched for years, I would use it and no bullets, less mess…
All these other tools, tear gas, tazers, pepper spray, mace, etc. all induce pain in one form or another. If in the wrong hands they all can be lethal. So whats so differant about a weapon that can be used from a distance, that can be used to immoblize someone.

Too bad the writer has such selective hearing. Woodward specifically stated that it was not a single technology. Most of the killing is done by bullets (sometimes big ones like Hellfire). If that is barbaric, then so is all war. The Baghdad situation has nothing to do with DE weapons.
