Embarrassing top secret US diplomatic files are set to be made public by Wikileaks.
The whistle-blowing website is preparing to release cables sent from American embassies around the world.
And President Obama’s aides fear they could reveal the work of US secret services, diplomatic rows and blunt assessments of foreign powers.
They also warned the unauthorised release threatens long-standing alliances and could even put lives at risk.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her staff have been calling friendly governments in a bid to limit the damage.
State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said: “These revelations are harmful to the United States and our interests.
