The world may be heading for its worst recession in a quarter of a century — if it’s lucky.
A steep slump looks likely as the credit squeeze crunches economies from the U.S. to Singapore and panic engulfs global financial markets.
“It’s certainly going to be the worst since the 1980s,” says Bradford DeLong, an economics professor at the University of California at Berkeley who worked at the U.S. Treasury Department from 1993 to 1995. “The hope is that it won’t become the worst unemployment business cycle since the Great Depression.”
Of special concern: The two big bulwarks of the global economy in recent years — U.S. consumer spending and the rapid growth of emerging markets — may be finally giving way in the face of the 14-month-old financial turmoil.

That raises the odds that the coming economic decline will be long and deep, despite U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s $700 billion financial rescue plan, similar efforts by European leaders and the coordinated interest-rate cuts engineered by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke and other central bankers last week.
“This is the worst crisis I’ve seen in my 50-year career,” William Rhodes, senior vice chairman of Citigroup Inc. in New York, told fellow bankers in Washington yesterday. “We still have to deal with the effects on the real economy here and elsewhere.”

BREAKING NEWS!!
Just got a call from a private source, but 99% credible.
Eight days ago (news was held up while source was in the field), the National Guard Armory in Pocatello, Idaho was seized by the U.S. regular Army and stripped of all weaponry. Everything from long range cannon to small arms.
These guys are the 148th Field Artillery Battalion They stripped it of all weaponry and ammo.
The CO asked “Why?” and was told “There’s gonna be a party this winter and you’re not invited!”
He was led to believe that this was a national happening, not just that armory.
I’ve called 5 other NG bases, but (for some odd reason) have received NO answer.
Any of you that have the ability (or strings) get on the phone and see if there’s verification from any of your sources.

When Religious people/cults can’t argue against the words in their Bible, they attempt to rationalize the words by claiming they don’t mean what they say. But that’s only when atheists quote the scriptures. When Religious people/cults quote the bible, suddenly it means exactly what it says. That’s called heresy when you take some divine law and twist it to support your doctrine. Jesus, is simply a Devil who grants redemption for the atrocities committed by his followers.
I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other crazy gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.
Today is Sunday, did you go pretend to drink the blood and eat the flesh of some idiot like a brainwashed cannibal? crazy barbaric rituals or is this saved for a really special barbaric ritual day. Hi Dan!
I totally know what you mean about all the rituals and silly things humans choose to do because they can’t fulfill their spirits. And I definately know what you mean about Religion being the stage for a dictator. I too am weary.
The interesting thing is that Jesus Christ felt the same way! He didn’t need a gold plated THRONE to speak truth, or a crazy symbol on his neck, or a stupid robe saying how HOLY He was! He hated all of the things people did like repeating the same prayers thinking that would save them or all the pagan rituals people used as a crutch. He knew their faith was weak.
The Man was all over the place! Wilderness, boats, mountainside! He just turned heads everywhere he went! He worked amazing miracles and healed people everywhere!

Please go read the gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Learn about the man that you slander. There was no one like Him before nor since. And He was killed for it.

I am not sure that animals use reason and logic- only instict. Also- do animals really believe in TRUTH AND JUSTICE!? In my oppinion, no. For example, I don’t see animals sitting around a table debating whether capital punishment is just or not. Nor do I see them debating over whether the earth is flat or round.
Truthfully though, I understand much of what you say.

Hey guys its Gunny from the forums. Just wanted to update you, I had commiecast wired all my rooms. I went on a bittorrent rage and got everything and seeded (free-use stuff). I started getting calls from Comcast 3x daily. In finally picked up to a guy yelling at me. “Sir you’ve used 957Gigs of traffic in September, this is your first warning, there will not be a second warning will will ban you for 12 months”…. my response was “I cant wait for your second call banning me I have AT&T standing by to handle my unlimited internet, voice, and dish cable, and my 3000 shares of comcast shares… see you at the next shareholder’s meeting”

no# 11 – correct about the Sabbath, but don’t forget the SUN-god Baal worshipped on SUN-day by the pagan Roman’s or Easter another Roman pagan ritual or Christmas for that matter. When the Roman’s slaughtered the original church setup by the apostles (which obeyed the 10 commandments) they created the Roman Cathloic Church and introduced some pagan rituals to distinguish them from the original church.
The elite world financiers and religious leaders have been pulling the strings for centuries and it is only now, thanks to the internet, that the truth is starting to spread. Please people, let people believe what they want to believe re religion. Personally in my opinion the god myth is beyond any rational belief therefore I see no reason to believe in any god.

How anyone could think that the government can create wealth out of nothing is beyond me. Magically pumping more paper into the system just makes the existing paper worth less. We cannot consume our way to wealth – we can only produce our way to wealth. Of course the govt knows this very well – they are playing a game to bring this country to it’s knees and then we will accept our enslavement with thanks.
With regard to the constant religious debate that fills this forum daily… we have the same 2 sides of the same coin game that has been played on us for centuries. It’s the same as the left/right paradigm… pick your side and play – nothing gets accomplished and that is exactly how it is designed. God/no god… pick your side – nothing get’s done. In all cases, neither side is right.. the truth lies elsewhere but if the elite can keep the masses debating within these confines, they can continue to advance their agenda.

The reason this crash and subsequent depression will be worse than ‘29 is that unlike 80 years ago, we have no latent manufacturing ability just waiting for the right war to be fired back up and start pumping out tanks and aircraft carriers. Our manufacturing sector has long since been shipped overseas, the factories leveled for subdivisions of paper houses, shopping malls, and coast-to-coast corporate franchises. Worse, our society is fragmented and isolated- by technology, crushing debt, and the breakup of the family unit. In the 30’s, folks pulled together because it was how they were raised. Today, too many of us prefer to hide behind our well-manicured hedges and tsk tsk about the neighbor who lost his job and home, and thank God we’re not that guy. It is exactly this “better him than me” attitude which empowers the elite and their government puppets to destroy our economy, livelihoods and freedoms.
