  • YouTube is losing money hand over fist, says Credit Suisse. As is Twitter.

    Emma Hartley
    London Telegraph
    Wednesday, May 6, 2009

If you want to get to grips with the scale of the challenge facing the newspaper industry, consider this slightly amazing piece that was published in Advertising Age a couple of days ago.

It describes at some length and in jolly detail (as do the various links from it, which are also worth following) the ways in which those massive cyber success stories YouTube and Twitter are believed to be losing money hand over fist, currently surviving only on the largesse of venture capitalists and Google (which recently bought YouTube despite it being loss-making). Zillions of hits every day, the confidence of their users and unrivalled niches on the internet have apparently failed so far to create the conditions for monetisation (the dread word).

That’s what newspapers are up against. It’s a cultural problem. YouTube is indispensible for viral marketers, the music industry and people who love videos of cute fluffy creatures being tickled.  Yet there are very few adverts on it – not even the bog standard Google ones, which is really quite hard to understand. Surely if people are prepared to put up with ads on Facebook they wouldn’t mind on YouTube, especially if it were a “use it or lose it” situation.

There are already ads throughout youtube.

Hmm, I’m sure that YouTube is making Google plenty of money just by manufacturing consent. Is Alex Jones’ channel still blocked/down on YouTube? (Case in point). The government probably pays good for a well-mislead and pacified public. Enjoy the internet and YouTube while it still has hints of freedom in it. You will tell your kids “I remember in my day, when the internet was free, where you could go to any site you wanted and read any information that you could get your eyes on.”

      atonix Reply:

Your kids will say “´well daddy, we put the blame on you…”

      Artyom Reply:

There is no freedom on Youtube. Being owned by google should tell you that right away.

Twitter, who cares if that fails, it is stupid anyways. Who wants to TWIT??????? God! I would love to beat these cappacino drinking, yuppie punks who sit around coming up with catch words like the forementioned.

All internet is owned and operated by the CIA.

That’s why MySpace, Youtube, Google, Facebook, and every other ‘totally free value added internet experience’ is just another dating mining OP for the CIA.

This site, ‘Prison Planet’ is nothing but a government op to collect the IP addresses of ‘known dissenters’ and other possible ‘persons of interest’ to the government.

      Pffft.

I love the CIA and all the government organisations around the world snooping on me.
The fact of the matter is that most of them will probably agree with what is being said on here if it’s a good point well made. They’re really after the gun toting maniacs that are one step away from inciting a civil war, hatred, racism and all the negative stuff that the vast majority of people disagree with. I know for a fact that the UK police use facebook to track people and get people’s associations – along with UK customs and excise but they are tracking people who have broken the law.

The problem arises when the new laws become so stupid and mundane that everyone is a criminal.

      Yeager Reply:

My God, you really are a lost cause.

      Either way piss off.

Since they are implementing censorship and regional diffusion policies, of course they will loose money. People are not stupid enough to accept this. They will move to the next service that gives back freedom to put and watch what they want.

lose money…. sorry .. but lose.. too many people write lose incorrectly to let it slip.

    5. Bob Says:

the internet is an esential tool for all sides of this info war, the truth never existed and never will as long as alll parties concerned except that one another are watching one another via the internet. it is a means of disclosure on all sides. money actually has nothing to do with it at all. its all about control on information and the freedom to express or not express dependin gon your own point of view. everyone who uses the public socia group site are aware of the censorship and the constant changing of rules and implimentations of control over one another but we al continue to use them , basically because it is a means to an end, it keeps the channels of communications open for al sides, when the internet finally shuts down which it willas we al know, then that is the alarm bell ringing again on all sides. dosnt matter whether you are in a tent in the middle of a field using your sataite mobile phone to reciev internet they know where you are , who you are and what you think , on the same token we know who they are, we know where thsy are and we know what their intending/thinking. as long as the gais played and the peices continue to move around the board ina sensible coherant manner then it really does not matter that much how much money , who does what, whatever new rule is implimented or who is tracking who and hell a simple software programme can send your ip address flying around the globe between the main 13 global servers that control the internet . its not he hard but yet again its not hat easy either to hide that bit of truth either. so , keep smiling, embrace your fellow brother and sister and send unconditional love ot everyone you see and meet in the streets and just be ready. thats all you can do really, yell from the tallest building if makes you feel anybetter. keep the info and disclosures bouncing back and forth. people will listen and will act when the time comes. human nature is a tricky one. depends what button you push!!!!!

    6. Nolebrab Says:

You don’t understand – it’s the PRECEDENT this sets that is important.

This isn’t just about Alex Jones – this is about the fact that Youtube can pull a Hugely popular channel for no legitimate breach of t.o.s.

Imho – this is a test – and if they don’t get enough resistance now – they will STEAMROLL over all and any user supplied content of substance in the future!

We have only ourselves to blame if we can’t keep the pressure on them to reinstate this channel!

      Artyom Reply:

Google owns it. There will be no problem if any other company that cares about a consumer base as long as they don’t fall for GREED with $ signs in their eyes. Did the US government create an internet usage rights law that regulates these companies like Google? I guarantee you if one goes through it will benefit google and not the users.

    7. Ben Steinke Says:

OK….Default, I’m guessing you’re one of Fintan Dunne’s shills who supports his cockamamie opinion that every truth site other than his own is a “CIA fake”. Alex’s site collecting names? Oooookaaay….can we see PROOF, please? Thanks.

      DRILL SARGEANT MCCLINTONLOCK Reply:

The proof is Mae East and Mae West are feed sites to the NSA complexes located just 1 block away from either. They know every IP that has visited every site. so whether Alex Jones is aware of it or not, the CIA and the NSA have lists of everyone that visits his site, the comments they leave, and their usage patterns.

      ZING.

      darkhorse Reply:

That is right Drill, This should be a no-brainer, that is why they are called “big brother”. Right to privacy ends where a thing is in open sight. The internet is open source. No one gets past a certain point of success on a way large scale without being co-opted by the man. It is a good ole boys club and if you play ball you may win big. This is the American model, established by Rockefeller early on. It has its’own life now and any one who crosses it will be double crossed. Even Rockeffeler himself would be eaten alive, by the machine of his grandfathers’ making if he were to some how have a change of heart and attempt to dismantle it. This goes for business in America in general, not just the internet.

      Artyom Reply:

That’s okay, CIA and NSA should know they are being monitored too. Their every internet move is being watched by other intelligence agencies and on top of that hackers who hate their guts. The commical thing is we are all just sitting around with keyboards and mice clicking away. Without electricity all of this is just pointless. hahah

    8. blitzcrowd Says:

I cant think of one large internet service that is actually making money, besides google (google adwords).

Youtube – videos files are large and storage and streaming is shit expensive.
Skype – been losing money since they began.
twitter – been losing money since they began.
Spotify – recently added ads but still no one wants to pay for premium.
      Yahoo – losing money
      facebook – losing money
      myspace – losing money

only thing keeping these companies afloat is sucker investors hoping that since they are so big they eventually have to make money.

all i have to say is enjoy it while you can cause it cannot continue without a price.

because youtube is not there to make money, really. It is a social experiment to dumb down the nation, and as a whole, collect citizens consciousness and awareness. It almost how the camera fitted express buses, with dozens of cameras inside in some cities, yet no advertising. Those buses are pretty much making their money from taking your picture and storing it somewhere.

Sorry, but who cares if Youtube, twitter, facebook, or any other website fails? I managed to survive a barren, hardscrabble existence before they were set up and I’m sure my empty life will continue after they’re gone. I remember when the interweb was known for all the high quality pron, not just videos of guys getting hit in the nuts or fan pages devoted to Twilight. If their services are really worth anything, someone will market them in a way that works and makes money. That’s the American way. Enjoy-Poul Arbayr

      Artyom Reply:

You are right! The only real death blow to the internet was from the music industry being upset from having to downgrade their elite private jets down to the executive models. The P2P and file sharing mixed with porn was when internet was actually interesting. Also research information usually led to university libraries, now it leads to all these wiki links and user blogs. Anyone who remembers internet of old will understand how shitty big business can make the internet. However, it seems to be a perpetual environment. Just hope that internet 2 doesn’t come around.
