attack hits the U.S.?  Surely it wouldn’t be that they want to keep the people on the edge of their seats and in panic mode in order to further the perceived need for a war with Iraq.

I know that the Bush administration would never play upon the fears of the American people in order to further their draconian usurpation of our cherished God-given and constitutionally protected freedoms.  Maybe they just like seeing anti-aircraft batteries sitting next to our monuments in Washington, D.C.  Perhaps it is comforting to them to see D.C. swarming with military personnel as if we really were under direct attack.

I guess this would help the nation see that we are “at war” and must be prepared to take on Saddam Hussein.  Never mind the millions of people across the globe that sent an unmistakable message on Saturday to our war-mongering head-of-state and his ally in Great Britain.  Mr. Blair seemed to be a bit chastised by the outpouring in his country and elsewhere.

For a little while it seemed that even President Bush hesitated in his rush against Iraq, but no, he took a deep breath, stepped back out into the thick smoke, and said “we will not retreat”.

Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post wrote, "A 1994 investigation by the Senate Banking Committee turned up dozens of biological agents shipped to Iraq during the mid-'80's under license from the Commerce Department, including various strains of anthrax, subsequently identified by the Pentagon as a key component of the Iraqi biological warfare program. The Commerce Department also approved the export of insecticides to Iraq, despite widespread suspicions that they were being used for chemical warfare."

And you wondered how the U.S. knew that Iraq has WMD’s.  So the question really isn’t if Iraq has them, but rather, it is as Chuck Baldwin recently stated in his column, “‘Has Iraq attacked America? Have they taken peace from our land? Are we fighting a justified defensive war, or are we the aggressors?’ When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, they claimed they had to launch a preemptive strike against the United States for something they perceived America was going to do. Was Japan justified? When Hitler invaded Poland and other European nations, he claimed the same thing. Was he justified?”

Would Saddam Hussein be justified in unleashing one, or many, of his WMD’s inside the United States as a preemptive strike to try to protect his country from the inevitable attack from the Bush war machine?  If we are justified as a sovereign nation to launch a preemptive strike, then so is he, so is North Korea, so is China, so is Russia, and so is every other nation.

Perhaps, the Bush logic “ain’t” so good.

Perhaps, since North Korea is a greater threat to us, the real reason isn’t security.

Duct Tape & Plastic

By Kirt R. Poovey

News flash! – America is on ORANGE ALERT!  Quick – go to your local hardware store and buy up all the duct tape and plastic that you can get your hands on!!  Wrap your house in plastic – quick!  The terrorists are coming!  (Never mind that this protection scheme is essentially worthless.)

Anyone remember the story of Chicken Little?  How about the boy that cried “Wolf”?  Has the Bush administration not read these stories and understood that a continual cry of alarm tends to desensitize the people to the real thing?  Or are they afraid of not having “warned” the American public in case another terrorist
