Americans ceding too much freedom

Florida Sun-Sentinel | December 24 2004

It is happeming and Bubya Bush has not even legally taken the oath of office yet.

The United States is sliding down the slippery slope to becoming the 21st century equivalent of 1930s Germany and the USSR with Bush in the Hitler/Stalin role, all in the name of the Patriot Act.

Does the image of mindless Hitler Youth remind you of one-issue Bush supporters? An uninformed electorate placed a charismatic lunatic in office, who proceeded to take away the freedoms of the general population, including religious, and persecute all who did not follow party lines.

No longer can a law-abiding citizen walk down the street without fear of persecution by law enforcement. It is now a crime to not identify yourself to a law enforcement officer. "Papers, please?"

The Gestapo and KGB did not need a reason to ask and now we also are expected to succumb to this treatment, all in the name of fighting terrorism.

The idea of a national ID card is being floated by our supposed representatives. We already have cameras at every renovated street intersection that can track our driving. The technology is available for these cards to be equipped with tracking chips.

Just think, somewhere in the recesses of Washington, a computer operator will be able to punch in your number and every place you have been and the routes you have taken will be shown on screen. "Impossible!" you say? Remember, you are required to show legitimate ID under penalty of law, so that card better be in your pocket at all times.

I am reminded of the old saying that ends with "... and when they came for me, there was nobody left."
