N.Y. fights U.S. suit on voting machines

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says the federal government's demand for the Empire State to replace all of its 20,000 lever voting machines by next November could create a lot of problems during next year's presidential elections.

In court papers filed Friday, Cuomo says the unrealistic schedule will heighten the risk of voting uncertainties.

State elections officials want to wait until 2009 to replace the machines.

The purpose of the five-year-old law is to enable disabled voters to cast ballots without assistance.

The issue will be in federal court on Thursday
