Baghdad blasts deter frightened voters

In Baghdad, security forces have lifted a ban on cars using the streets despite constant bomb attacks on the morning of Iraq’s national election.

So far at least 24 people have been killed in the capital in bomb attacks intended to frighten Iraqis away from the polling booths.

Even before the polls opened at 7am (local time), the sound of mortar fire could be heard in the city.


More than a dozen have been fired – along with two separate suicide bomb attacks and three houses rigged to explode near polling booths.

It appears the threat by Al Qaeda to disrupt this election is working.

Early reports suggest Iraqis are not voting in large numbers, which may explain why the government has reopened the streets to traffic – in order to make it easier for people to get to polling stations – but which also carries the risk of an even lager attack taking place.
