A group of left-wing activists in the UK has forced the University of Cambridge to agree to the removal of various literary classics written by white authors from its English courses.
The university will be replacing the works of white writers with books authored by “black and minority ethnic writers,” the British media report.
In an Orwellian move, “for the first time, lecturers and tutors would have to “ensure the presence” of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) writers on their course, under plans discussed by the English Faculty’s Teaching Forum,” UK newspaper Daily Telegraph writes. “Cambridge University’s English Literature professors could replace white authors with black writers, following proposals put forward by academic staff in response to student demands to “decolonise” the curriculum,” the newspaper added.
This academic purge follows an ‘anti-racism’ campaign launched by a local student union official. Lola Olufemi, student union’s “women’s officer” had started a petition titled “Decolonising the English Faculty” claiming that teaching of classical works “elevates white male authors at the expense of all others.”
The British newspaper Express covered the ‘academic purge’ underway in Cambridge:
Cambridge University has been forced to “decolonise” its English literature course to avoid “risks perpetuating institutional racism”, it has been revealed.
Lola Olufemi, Cambridge University’s Student Union’s women’s officer and the voice behind the move, penned a letter to professors with over 100 student signatures.
The letter, titled “Decolonising the English Faculty” read: “For too long, teaching English at Cambridge has encouraged a ‘traditional’ and ‘canonical’ approach that elevates white male authors at the expense of all others.
“What we can no longer ignore, however, is the fact that the curriculum, taken as a whole, risks perpetuating institutional racism.”
Following Miss Olufemi’s request, lecturers and tutors have been forced to “ensure the presence” of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) writers on English courses. (…)
One of the “points for action” discussed in the meeting was to “ensure the presence of BME texts and topics on lecture lists”.
This is just another attempt by the Left to tighten its stranglehold over academic institutions by dumbing down the level of intellectual debate. The left-wing activists, while actively quelling any expression of intellectual diversity if it challenges their dogmas – often with physical violence – are obsessed with diversity based on narrow definitions of color and ethnicity. Don’t be surprised if the all the new ‘Black and Minority Ethnic’ writers in the syllabus turn out to be leftist radicals. These ‘anti-racism’ activists won’t be accommodating black conservative or libertarian thinkers who dare to defy their ‘color scheme.’
These progressive agitators do not see university campuses as places of learning and intellectual pursuits, but as recruiting and training grounds for the next generation of indoctrinated cadres. It is not enough for them to control the faculty or keep the dissenting voices off the campus; they must purge the bookshelves as well.
