Cameron risks wrath of Tory Eurosceptics as he signals there won’t be vote on Lisbon Treaty

David Cameron signalled today that he will not be able to hold true to his pledge to give the public the chance to vote on the controversial Lisbon Treaty.

The Tory leader acknowledged he is almost certain to have to drop his promise to hold a referendum on the document as it nears full ratification.

He has previously insisted that the Conservatives would ‘not let matters rest’ if the treaty, which would create a blueprint for a new EU superstate, came into force.

But today he was markedly more measured, only saying that his team would ‘do what we can to make good all our promises’.

The admission will anger the Eurosceptics in his party and at grassroots level and risks re-opening rifts between Tory factions on the divisive issue of the EU.
