“Captain Marvel” Star Brie Larson Has No Time for Girl Hero Virtue Signaling

Marvel dropped a new trailer for Captain Marvel this week.

Two thoughts come to mind. One, lately the Marvel movies barely hit average. They exist just to set up other movies, which exist just to set up other movies. Though granted, still better than anything from the DC Comics. The second thing is the stampede of virtual signaling we’re set to endure about this being the first girl hero to lead a Marvel movie. Because you can’t just be a not white guy without it needing to be politized. Please note Woman, Wonder and Panther, Black (see Angry Liberal Film Critics are Upset ‘Wonder Woman’ isn’t Feminist Enough and Leftists Whine Over the Lack of Lesbian Love Scenes in ‘Black Panther’).

Everyone is making a big deal about the star of a Marvel movie having lady bits. Everyone, except for Captain Marvel star Brie Larson.

I don’t know. I don’t know how it’s any different. To be honest, I don’t want it to feel different. Kind of over the, “First female blah blah blah,” and “Wow, maybe women can actually do the same things that dudes can do.” What a crazy concept. I feel like the more we talk about it, the more we perpetuate the myth that it’s an impossible task.

Ripley in the Alien movies. Sarah Connor of the Terminator franchise. “Badass” female characters are only new if you’re a low informational Millennial who thinks history began in January 2009. To claim otherwise downplays the incredible work by some incredible actresses. When have you ever seen Jodie Foster play a shrinking violet? Did no one see Speed with Sandra Bullock? Susan Sarandon in The Client? Critics make it sometimes sound like we’ve never seen a girl in a movie before. Or a woman in a leading role who takes no shits. False. We won’t even go down the Michelle Phieffer road. We’d be here all day.

Plus, if seeing your group be visually represented is an important issue to you, you’d think it sends a more powerful message to NOT make a big deal about it. Act like you’ve been here before. Instead of a special case that didn’t earn it on your own.

You see this developing in pro wrestling. Where it looks like WrestleMania may have it’s first all-girl headline main event between Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch. Not because #ItsTime. Not to score political points. But because the two wrestlers are legit the most entertaining thing in the WWE. Some would argue the only entertaining thing in the WWE. Building it as a legit fight like you would any men’s match sends a more powerful message than months of corporate virtue signaling over “look at us…girls!”

Hopefully, the producers of Captain Marvel follow Larson’s lead and just promote the movie as a movie. Though I have my doubts.
