China Holds More Military Exercises Amid Tensions With U.S.

(CNSNews.com) – Chinese armed forces on Thursday continued a second set of back-to-back exercises, underscoring expanding capabilities and ambitions that have prompted unease among top U.S. military officers. That unease has been exacerbated by Beijing’s freezing of military-to-military ties.

The five-day air defense force drill involving seven different types of aircraft, missile facilities and 12,000 personnel comes on the heels of live-fire naval exercises in the South China Sea, where China is embroiled in long-running disputes over territory and natural resources with multiple countries in Southeast Asia.

Relations between China and U.S. have taken several hits in recent weeks. Beijing, angered by U.S. naval operations in neighboring waters, bristled particularly over a newly articulated U.S. position on the South China Sea disputes.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton unleashed a strong Chinese reaction when she said during a regional security forum in Hanoi that it was a U.S. “national interest” to see freedom of navigation and respect for international law in the South China Sea
