Wednesday morning, CNN Tonight host Don Lemon denigrated President Donald Trump’s phenomenal speech to Congress the previous day by suggesting that it sounded as though it were “written by a college student for someone else trying to use big words.” In other words, Trump isn’t smart enough to have had a hand in writing it.

According to Newbusters, Lemon arrived at this conclusion when he realized he had a “Nixon versus Kennedy television moment tonight because…if you listen the speech, it sounds much different than if you’re looking at it on the television.”

“It sounds like a speech that was written for someone that he was reciting,” Lemon told his panel of commentators, “and there were some big words and phrases that I don’t think that he actually connected to if you just listened to the speech.”

Former Barack Obama aide Jen Psaki agreed that “[i]t didn’t sound like his voice” which prompted Lemon to note that the off-the-cuff remarks of the last two Presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, always seemed similar to their prepared remarks.

“The way President Trump speaks extemporaneously,” Lemon continued,

is not the same as what he said tonight. It sounded, to me, and this is just — I mean, I thought it was — he sounded very presidential. This was a speech written by a college student for someone else trying to use big words to impress that the person who is reciting it did not know the meaning of the words. That’s how it sounded.

CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers disagreed because, as far as the tone of Trump’s speech, she’s “interviewed him a couple of times and that’s what it reminded me of.” She added that Trump’s speech seemed “very familiar” to her experience of her private interviews with him.

Lemon conceded that the President can be “charming in person” but he insisted Powers was wrong: “I know that’s a hard — that’s just my assessment if you listen. Go back and just listen to it and don’t watch it.”

Admit it, Lemon: Trump knocked that speech out of the ballpark and the American people responded accordingly. Admit it and move on.
