Twelve people died after a US drone fired on an alleged hideout linked to a Pakistani Taliban leader who threatened Washington, a security officials have said.

The raid came a day after Taliban boss Baitullah Mehsud claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a police academy in the eastern city of Lahore.

He said it was retaliation for US missile strikes on militant bases on the Afghan border.

Mehsud also vowed to launch an attack on Washington or even the White House in telephone interviews with local media.

But the FBI said he has made similar threats previously and there is no indication of an imminent attack.

A local intelligence official said the attacked compound, in a remote area of the Orakzai tribal region near the Afghan border, belonged to one of Mehsud’s commanders.
