Egypt: eight killed as new clashes in Cairo threaten to reignite mass protests

Security forces moved in to retake a vital area of central Cairo early on Saturday, after street battles in which eight died and nearly 300 were injured.

Razor-wire barriers were erected on access roads to the area around the Cabinet buildings by security forces were attacked by protesters with stones and petrol bombs.

On Friday soldiers had stormed an anti-military protest camp outside the Cabinet building, beating women with sticks and hurling chunks of concrete and glass onto protesters from the roof of the parliament. The clampdown was launched only a day after millions voted in parliamentary elections.

At least eight protesters were shot dead, including a prominent Muslim cleric, activists said. The protesters had been camped in front of the building for three weeks demanding the ruling military leave power.
