Hundreds of water heaters and home heating systems in Lane County are getting “smarter.” The Emerald people’s Utility District is conducting a pilot project aimed at cutting electrical use and saving the utility and its customers some cash.
During the pilot program, EPUD will install about 200 “smart” water heater and heating system monitors, free of charge, in homes through-out their service area.
The monitors allow both customers and EPUD to control electrical use more efficiently. For the water heaters, it’s an extra box on the wall; for heating systems, It’s a new thermostat. The devices allow EPUD to remotely control the appliances, shutting them off when customers aren’t using them.
