On one of the more chaotic days in Washington anyone will experience, CNN’s The Situation Room saw a 22-minute interview that careen off the rails from the get-go on Thursday night between host Wolf Blitzer and White House senior adviser Stephen Miller that touched on the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the likelihood of a government shutdown over border security.
The interview began on a bizarre note as Blitzer welcomed Miller and noticed that Miller was smiling, so Blitzer scolded him: “I see you smiling. But right now it doesn’t look like there’s a lot to smile about. Very serious issues.”
In just over the first eight minutes, Miller was asked about Mattis quitting the administration due to a slew of fundamental disagreements with the President, including the sudden withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. To put it mildly, Blitzer and Miller clashed with the latter attempting to downplay and spin the Mattis news.
Blitzer noted that Mattis is “not retiring” but “quitting in protest over the President’s policies” and yet Miller continued to insist that “James Mattis is retiring” and such a move is “very normal at this point of the administration to have turnover.”
