Chris Christie has sparked outrage after being pictured brazenly sunning himself on a Jersey Shore beach on Sunday despite closing them to the public following a state budget showdown.
Photographs taken by NJ Advance Media show the New Jersey Governor and his family, including wife Mary Pat, treating the huge stretch of empty shoreline as his own private beach while thousands were rammed onto beaches a couple of miles up the shore trying their best to enjoy their holiday weekend.
To add insult to injury, Christie, 54, then headed back to Trenton in the state helicopter to hold a news conference about the government shutdown where he told reporters with no irony that he ‘didn’t get any sun today’.
When asked later, his spokesman clarified and said that the governor takes sun screen seriously and that his baseball hat had protected him.
‘Yes, the governor was on the beach briefly today talking to his wife and family before heading into the office,’ the spokesman, Brian Murray, told NJ.com. ‘He did not get any sun. He had a baseball hat on.’
