G20 Rally Victim Died From Internal Bleeding

A policeman has been questioned on suspicion of manslaughter after G20 rally victim Ian Tomlinson was found to have died of internal bleeding and not a heart attack.

The 47-year-old newspaper vendor, who had not been taking part in the London protests, was filmed being shoved violently by police and then being pushed to the floor at the demonstration on April 1.

An initial post-mortem on Mr Tomlinson, whose death raised concerns about the tactics deployed by police, ruled that he died of a heart attack.

However, a second examination carried out by pathologist Dr Nat Cary instead found that an abdominal haemmorhage – a vastly different condition – was the cause of death.



“The cause of the haemorrhage remains to be ascertained,” read a statement from the coroners’ court, released by Mr Tomlinson’s family lawyers.

An officer involved in the incident has since been questioned under caution for manslaughter, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has confirmed.

Sky’s Home Affairs correspondent Mark White said: “This is the worst possible news for the Territorial Support Group and for the Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
