Gangs of youths attacked banks across Athens on Saturday as the violence that has engulfed Greece looks set to enter a second week.

Greece’s prime minister, Costas Karamanlis, was battling against demands that he step down after a week of violent protests. The opposition Socialist party called for him to quit and call an early election after his government failed to contain rioters protesting at the death of a teenage boy shot dead by a policeman last weekend.

After another night of violence, in which cars were torched and five banks and an office of the ruling conservative party were attacked and set on fire by mobs of youths, thousands gathered for peaceful protests yesterday in the capital and in the city of Thessaloniki to remember 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos.

Banners carrying his name were held aloft outside the Athens parliament, while many of the students wore white as a sign of peace, and carried flowers.

Militants among the protesters continued to occupy nearby university buildings, many of them wearing masks. More violence was expected last night as those behind the worst of the looting and riots – which have seen fierce clashes with police – were thought likely to renew their street battles with security forces to mark the passing of the first week since the schoolboy died.
