Israel urges united front against Iran

Israel has urged major sides engaged in Tehran’s nuclear case to set aside their divisions in order to focus on Iran’s nuclear program.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the US and Europe had to set aside their differences with China and Russia as divisions were inhibiting efforts to put up a united front against Iran, Bloomberg reported.

Barak also accused Iran of nuclear weapons proliferation, stressing Tehran’s alleged threat could be defeated only through “a paradigm shift in international relationships”.

Washington and Moscow are at loggerheads over Russia’s opposition to the US plan to deploy missile shield systems in Europe and the Czech Republic. The US says the plan is aimed at confronting Iran’s threat. Russia, however, rejects the claims.

Meanwhile, the US and some western countries accuse China of violating human rights in Tibet. China, however, accuses the US and the EU of complicating the issue in Tibet.

Russia and China say they are against the Western powers’ call for fresh sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

“Russia is against the sanctions pushed forward by some of the six [the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, US, Britain, France, Russia and China, plus Germany],” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov told Interfax.

“The Western countries are for the sanctions. China like Russia did not back it,” he added.

His comments came one day after the meeting of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany in Paris on November 13. They have imposed three rounds of sanctions against Iran.

Israel, the possessor of the sole nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, along with the United States and its European allies accuse Iran of seeking to develop nuclear arms. But, the UN nuclear watchdog, which has extensively monitored Iran’s nuclear activities since 2003, concedes that it is not in a position to fully clarify the nature of the Iranian nuclear program.

Israel and the US have repeatedly threatened Iran with military action, they says ‘all options are on the table’ when it comes to halting the development of Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran insists the program is intended for peaceful purposes only.
