White House staff are said to become nervous whenever Vice President Joe Biden finds himself in front of a microphone. That nervousness will now increase.
As he returned from his lunch break to yesterday’s health reform summit, Mr Biden was overheard telling a companion: “It’s easy being Vice President. You don’t have to do anything.”
A microphone on a TV camera operated by CSPAN, the public service broadcaster, then picked up another voice saying, “It’s like being the grandpa and not the parent.” The Vice President replied: “Yeah, that’s it!”
He was joking, aides said afterwards, citing a list of speeches and public engagements that Mr Biden has made recently or is about to make, including a trip to Iraq, a speech on nuclear non-proliferation and a report on his pet project, the so-called Middle Class Task Force.
