At a White House press briefing Thursday addressing President Donald Trump’s role in comforting grieving Gold Star family members, chief of staff John Kelly gave the press a powerful earful about the sacrifices American servicemembers and their families make for our country. In the process he utterly excoriated clownish Democrat Congresswoman Frederica Wilson for listening in on, and politicizing, the President’s phone call to the grieving widow of a slain soldier.
Wilson had revealed that the President told Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson, that her husband “knew what he was getting into” — a comment the Trump-hating media ran with, as if Trump were callously dismissing the soldier’s death. Nothing could be further from the truth.
“It stuns me that a member of Congress would have listened in on the conversation – absolutely stuns me,” said retired general Kelly, who lost his own son in battle. “And I thought at least that was sacred”:
When I was a kid growing up I thought a lot of things were sacred in our country. Women were sacred, looked upon with great honor. That’s obviously not the case anymore as we’ve seen from recent cases. Life was sacred. That’s gone. Religion. That seems to be gone as well. Gold Star families, I think that left in the convention over the Summer. I just thought the selfless devotion that brings a man or woman to die in the battlefield, I thought that might be sacred.
Kelly said he was so disturbed by Wilson’s public statements that he went to Arlington National Cemetery to spend time among the graves of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, “some of whom I put there,” referring to his command of soldiers in Iraq.
Kelly confirmed that he had advised a very concerned Trump about what to say to a soldier’s grieving family, including the aforementioned statement for which Trump was attacked, that a soldier knows what he signs up for when he volunteers to serve in the Army.
Kelly referred to Wilson as a “selfish member of Congress” and like an “empty barrel making the most noise.” He described how, at the dedication of an FBI field office in 2015, speakers remembered slain FBI agents for whom the building was dedicated, followed by Wilson, who crowed about how she got then-President Obama to fork over the funding for the building.
“We were stunned. Stunned that she had done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned,” Kelly said.
He went on to urge journalists repeatedly to keep in mind the selfless sacrifices and patriotism of those in the military.
“I still hope as you write your stories and I would appeal to America that let’s not let this maybe be last thing that’s held sacred in our society,” he said.
As reporters shouted questions, Kelly responded, “Is anyone here a Gold Star parent or sibling?” No answer. Kelly went on to field questions only from reporters who at least knew a Gold Star family member.
That’s leadership. That’s how you handle the press. And that’s how you shame leftists like Rep. Wilson who are so far beneath General Kelly’s honor and service to this country that all they can do is snipe hatefully like
