Jorge Mario Bergoglio Becomes First Jesuit Pope

London Independent [1]
March 13, 2013

In a shock decision from the Vatican, the new Pope is Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires. The first ever Jesuit Pope and the first ever Latin American to lead the Catholic Church, he now takes the name Pope Francis. He is known as a humble man who takes the bus to work and cooks his own meals. From an evangelical background, with a traditional theology, he is likely to be strong on reform.

In a speech from the balcony of St Peter’s, Pope Francis called on the world to “take the path of love and fraternity”.

The identity of the new Pontiff was announced by Cardinal Jean-Louis Pierre Tauran. It is surprising not least because, at 76, Pope Francis is just one year younger than Pope Benedict XVI was when he became Pope, and age was cited as a major factor in his decision to step aside.

Bells rang out and thousands cheered “Viva il Papa!” and waved flags in St Peter’s Square in Rome after the smoke rose following the second vote on the second day of the Conclave [2], the gathering of the cardinals. And among the faithful Twitter followers around the world, it was noted that the account @Pontifex re-appeared [3].
