The most recent edition of New York Magazine has a particularly annoying cover, depicting Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski whispering into Joe Scarborough’s ear. The magazine describes the article that lurks inside:

On the cover of New York Magazine’s July 24–August 6, 2017, issue, Morning Joe co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough talk to Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi about their star-crossed relationship with the president, and how they became satellite antagonists in the ensemble cast of the Trump-administration soap opera. “He watches, says he doesn’t watch, and then he freaks out with what he sees,” Scarborough tells Nuzzi. “We think it’s in the best interest of the country for him to stop watching our show.”

“I think it’s easy to assume that, because so much of the drama here plays out in front of all of us on television or on Twitter, we know everything,” Nuzzi says of writing this piece. “I was interested particularly in the experience of being two recurring characters in the Trump Show.

Two recurring characters in the Trump Show? Please. As Tiana Lowe wrote in National Review, “Once upon a time, the greatest sin journalists could commit was to make themselves a part of the story.” Not in 2017. Here’s the full cover:

After Joe and Mika’s very public dispute with President Trump, they’re going on what is essentially a press tour. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, according to NRO, “the duo discussed the vicissitudes of journalism in the 24-hour news cycle, the ethics of sourcing, and their own relationship, making a few obvious Trump jokes along the way. At the end, Joe even got to debut a song from his new dad-rock album!”

Disgusting. In an era of “fake news” accusations, it’s hard not to assume that the media personalities are creating drama to promote their own brand. And the nation suffers as its citizens try, in vain, to find reporters they can trust to deliver the news without bias. As Lowe wrote:

Reporters have a right to stick up for themselves when unfairly attacked, and they have a duty to cover the news with unflinching scrutiny. Brzezinski, who covered 9/11 as a CBS correspondent, and Scarborough, who has represented the people in the House of Representatives, should know better. The government is made more powerful and the people are made less so when the press loses its credibility. Given that said credibility is already at an all-time low, cover stories like this one simply do not help matters one bit.
