Mary #MeToo? Prof says God ‘grossly predatory’ for impregnating virgin without ‘consent’

Dr. Sprankle has a Christmas story for his students, but it’s a slightly different take on the New Testament’s tale of the virgin birth of Christ.

From Sprankle’s perspective, God is a rapist who exploited his authority to manipulate the Virgin Mary into carrying his child, which is “an unethical abuse of power at best and grossly predatory at worst,” he explained

Sprankle, an associate professor of clinical psychology and sexuality studies at Minnesota State University, posted his thoughts to Twitter this week.

“The virgin birth story is about an all-knowing, all-powerful deity impregnating a human teen,” he wrote Monday. “There is no definition of consent that would include that scenario. Happy Holidays.”

Folks who actually read the Bible were quick to point out the esteemed professor doesn’t have a clue.

“A psych degree does not equal Biblical competency,” Benjamin Sanchez shot back. “First, Mary consented to becoming the mother of Jesus. Second, no early Christian believed the Holy Spirit had physical relations with Mary. The emphasis is Jesus, the incarnation of the eternal Son of God, has only one Father.”

“Eric, the entire story involves Mary’s consent, and would not have happened without it. The amazing part of the story is God’s request for her consent (it was required!)” Kenny Buchard wrote.

“Part of the reason Mary is venerated is that her willing ‘yes’ to God’s request results in our salvation.”

“Sorry. (Luke) 26:38 states clearly that the angel communicated God’s plan for Mary and in verse 38 she agreed,” Tom Cleary added. “Whether you believe or disbelieve, it helps if you actually read the text.”

Despite the blowback, and evidence in the Bible disputing Sprankle’s distorted views, the professor is sticking to his guns, applying #MeToo standards of consent to the Most High.

“The biblical god regularly punished disobedience,” he wrote. “The power difference (deity vs mortal) and the potential for violence for saying ‘no’ negates her ‘yes.’ To put someone in this position is an unethical abuse of power at best and grossly predatory at worst.”
