North Korean media hints that a US pledge to extend its nuclear umbrella to Japan and South Korea would be considered as ‘declaration of a nuclear war’ in the troubled peninsula.

The commentary, which first appeared in the official newspaper of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea on Wednesday, strongly condemned the expansion of the nuclear umbrella in Southeast Asia.

Senior officials in Washington have said that the US will do what it deems necessary for the security of its allies in the troubled region.

The US already maintains a nuclear umbrella over South Korea. The security measure was taken after the Korean War ended in 1953. However, there has never been a written agreement over the umbrella.

The commentary also called US President Obama’s vision for a world without nuclear weapons as “falsehood.”

“If the United States seriously wants nuclear disarmament, it should set an example by carrying it out itself.”

In April, Obama called for “a world without nuclear weapons” and said that Washington had a “moral responsibility” to lead the way, as the only nation ever to use them.

Meanwhile, Interfax news agency quoted a senior Russian military source as saying that Moscow had obtained information on Pyongyang’s plans to test-launch another ballistic missile.

“We have certain information about the type and the characteristics of the missile. However, we do not have accurate data on the timing of its launch,” the source said.

Tension in the troubled Korean peninsula has built up since May 25, when Pyongyang staged its second nuclear test and fired a series of short-range missiles subsequently.

Relations between the two Koreas deteriorated after the conservative government of President Lee came to power last year.

South Korean and American troops in the volatile peninsula are currently on high alert at the Yellow sea border.
