NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — A local police force is looking to add some muscle where there hasn’t been any before.

On Tuesday night, the City Council of National City is expected to approve spending $127,000 in grant funding from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase a Ballistic Armored Tactical Transport (BATT).

No city funds will be used to purchase the vehicle, which can transport more than a dozen police officers safely to a scene with its armored walls.

“So if we’re going to an incident that’s involving a suspect that is shooting at citizens or police officers, this will give added protecting to those officers,” said National City SWAT commander Lt. David Espiritu.

The BATT would be the latest addition to a police force that has seen an overall drop in crime every year since 2006. Surprisingly, National City has never had an armored transport before because it really hasn’t needed one.
