No citizen rights for NY terror suspect

The arrested suspect in the recently failed New York bombing has been stripped of his US citizenship and charged with terrorism-related offences.

Faisal Shahzad was arrested on Monday as he prepared to board a Dubai-bound plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Pakistan-born former US citizen was questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) without initially being read his legal rights to remain silent or have a lawyer present before questioning.

The FBI later said that Shahzad had admitted his role in Saturday’s attempted attack, providing what they called “valuable intelligence and evidence.”

The suspect was not brought before a court as expected on Tuesday. No reason has been given for the delay.

Shahzad is reportedly the owner of the SUV that was found laden with explosives in Times Square.

A street vender tipped off police about the car, after noticing smoke coming out of it.

Shahzad has apparently told police that he had no accomplices and was acting alone.

The FBI says that he has also admitted to receiving bomb-making training in Pakistan’s volatile tribal region of Waziristan.

The northwestern region bordering Afghanistan is currently subject to unrelenting US drone attacks.

Some 880 Pakistanis have been killed in the US strikes since August 2008. Nearly all the dead are civilians.
