Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was breathing fire on MSNBC after President Trump’s Oval Office address Tuesday, alleging illegal immigrants are “more American than any person who seeks to keep them out ever will be.”
The youngest person ever elected to the lower chamber shared her take on the president’s immigration address with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow ahead of the official Democratic response, and it was clear her focus is not on securing the border.
“I cannot tell you the amount of dysfunction this president is advancing,” she told Maddow. “We now have over 100 new members of this freshman class and I cannot even get laptops to my caseworkers on the ground in the Bronx and Queens so they can process the needs of our constituents.”
Ocasio-Cortez alleged the situation is preventing her “case workers” from “getting started” with mortgage applications and other government assistance “because the president has decided to hold the paychecks of everyday Americans hostage so that he can fulfill a campaign … I don’t even want to call it a promise, a campaign fantasy that the vast majority of Americans disapprove of.”
Also, Trump is a liar, she said.
“And not only that, in the actual address there was falsehood after falsehood and we have to make sure we get our facts straight,” said Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described socialist.
“Everyday immigrants commit crimes at a far lower rate than native-born Americans and not only that but the women and children on the border that are trying to seek refuge and seek opportunity in the United States of America with nothing but the shirt on their backs are acting more American than any person who seeks to keep them out ever will be.”
Ocasio-Cortez alleged Trump has a “proven track record of discrimination against anybody who’s really non-white.” That makes people feel “unsafe,” she said.
“No one should feel unsafe in the United States of America and that includes our amazing and beautiful and productive immigrant community,” she said. “And moreover, the one thing that the president has not talked about is the fact that he has systematically engaged in the violation of international human rights on our border.”
Ocasio-Cortez would rather dismantle the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that protects the border than deal with what Trump described as a “humanitarian and security crisis” that’s plagued America for decades, Fox News reports.
Ocasio-Cortez did not mention how the country’s broken immigration system threatens the safety of legal citizens, instead insisting the president is to blame for “death” on the southern border.
“The president should not be asking for more money to an agency that has systematically violated human rights,” she complained. “The president should be really defending why we are funding such an agency at all because right now, what we are seeing is death.”
In his nationwide address, Trump seemed to agree that the situation is deadly, though he focused on the countless violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants, many at the direction of transnational gangs.
“How much more American blood must be shed before Congress does its job?” Trump questioned.
