Pakistani officials say they have not ruled out India’s involvement in the ambush on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the eastern city of Lahore.

“Indian involvement in the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team cannot be ruled out,” Lahore Commissioner Khushro Pervaiz was quoted by Geo TV as saying.

Also, (retired) General Hameed Gul, a former chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), said that India wanted to declare Pakistan a terrorist state and the firing on the Sri Lankan team was related to that conspiracy.

On Tuesday, 12 gunmen armed with grenades, rocket launchers and automatic weapons ambushed the team and its accompanying police on the Liberty Square roundabout in the heart of Lahore.

At least seven policemen escorting the team bus were killed, along with a driver. Seven cricketers and an assistant coach were also injured.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and the gunmen fled after a furious shootout with Pakistani police.

There have been other speculations, linking the extremists to Al-Qaeda and Taliban infested northwest, militants groups spawned in Kashmir and Tamil Tiger separatists in Sri Lanka.
