A new national poll compiled by the much respected Quinnipiac University finds that a majority of Americans view the Obama administration as incompetent, while more Americans also believe the president himself is not honest or trustworthy.

Less than a week ahead of the State Of Union Address, the survey shows that 53 percent of voters see the current administration as “not competent in running the government,” while only 42 percent believe Obama’s White House is competent.

On Obama himself, only 46 percent believe him to be honest and trustworthy, while 49 percent do not. A further 47 percent say he is not paying attention to what his administration is doing, while fewer Americans, 45 percent, believe he is paying attention.

The president’s overall job approval rating continues to occupy a near historic low, falling to a negative 40 – 54 percent, down 1 point from January 8.

On separate issues, Obama fares even worse in the eyes of the American public, receiving negative ratings on four out of five key issues.

On the economy he scores a negative 39 – 56 percent, while on healthcare Obama receives a negative 36 – 59 percent. Those two issues were named as the top priorities by voters in the survey, with a total of 77 percent stating that the economy is “not so good” or “poor”.

“‘It’s the economy, Mr. President,’ say dissatisfied American voters who are not yet willing to give President Barack Obama a thumbs up on his presidency,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

On Obamacare, just 38 percent say they approve of the new law, with 56 percent opposed. That figure represents yet another decline in support. Since the Affordable Health Care Act was launched in October, already dwindling support has fallen by 7 percentage points, Quinnipiac finds.

“If — and it’s a big “if” — the president can convince the American people that the economy is getting better and that Obamacare will be good for them, it will go a long way to rebuilding his sagging job approval ratings.” Malloy noted.

The poll also found that only 1 percent of Americans feel that gun control is an important issue that should be pursued by the administration.

Overall, 65 percent of Americans said that they were either “somewhat dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with the way things are going in the nation today.
