A group of Russian troops stationed in South Ossetia have reportedly entered the Georgian territory attempting to construct fortifications.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said in a statement released on Wednesday that the Russian forces deployed a 50-strong unit and an armored personnel carrier on the Georgian side of South Ossetia’s border in the village of Kvemo Nikozi.

As a result of the deployment which came at 12:30 pm local time (0820 GMT), the Georgian police post in the villag were ‘blocked’. There was, however, no indication that the contingent was moving any further into Georgian territory.

“The ministry of internal affairs deplores such activities and calls upon the Russian side to cease illegal activities and the continued occupation of Georgian territories,” the statement issued by the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

The Wednesday incident comes as Moscow has at times been accused by Tbilisi of not heeding a European Union-brokered ceasefire that calls on Russian forces to return to positions they held before the Caucasus conflict.

Tension between Georgia and Russia emerged in August after Tbilisi launched an all-out military strike against South Ossetia. Moscow responded by moving in its forces to protect its peacekeepers and South Ossetians, most of whom hold Russian citizenship.
