In an article entitled “So what if abortion ends life?” Salon.com staff writer Mary Elizabeth Williams says she believes that life begins at conception but it is okay to destroy that life by abortion because “all life is not equal,” adding that if she got pregnant in her current circumstances, “you bet your ass I’d have an abortion. I’d have the world’s greatest abortion.”
“Here’s the complicated reality in which we live: All life is not equal,” writes Williams in the Jan. 23 edition of Salon.com. “[A] fetus can be a human life without having the same rights as the woman in whose body she resides. She’s the boss. Her life and what is right for her circumstances and her health should automatically trump the rights of the non-autonomous entity inside of her. Always.”
Williams adds to her argument by stating that “we make choices about life all the time in our country” and references drone strikes overseas, prisoners in U.S. penal facilities, “patients with terminal illnesses and accident victims.” She notes that abortion takes a life but also saves a life because it liberates the mother to go on and pursue her own life, career, and family choices without the apparent burden of a child.
