New managers at a California complex refuse to explain why a resident can’t display the American flag inside his own apartment.

Steve Roberts, whose dad served 25 years in the military, told the local ABC affiliate that the FDC management group will not renew his lease at The Oaks unless he removes Old Glory from inside his front window.

“The American flag, it means to me freedom,” Roberts told ABC10 News. “I didn’t think I would have a problem. None of my neighbors have complained to me, and I asked the previous management for approval.”

Roberts said his lease restricts “decorations, signs, or lettering” outside the structure, but his flag is inside his living room window and can only be seen when he opens the blinds.

The managerment company’s district manager told the leasing office that Roberts could only stay on a month-to-month basis until he took down the flag, Roberts told ABC10 News, and he refuses to do.

“It’s just wrong,” he said. “You can’t tell someone what they can and cannot have displayed inside their own place, and it’s the American flag in America.”
