The ban on liquids in air passengers’ hand luggage is to continue for another three years.

The European Union announced today that the misery will continue until 2013 when mass-screening technology to detect explosives in fluids is perfected.

The current restrictions affecting millions of UK passengers will end with ‘a clear and final deadline’ in April 2013 as part of an overhaul of aviation security, said the European Commission.

British and European airports will have to install new technology capable of detecting liquid explosives as a result of the move.

The UK’s Department for Transport said last night: ‘The UK is already working towards meeting these requirements.’

The ban on liquids came into force in Europe in 2006 after British police uncovered an al-Qaeda plot to blow up transatlantic airliners bound for North America using bombs made from liquid explosives.
