President Donald Trump on Tuesday threw right-wing populist Matteo Salvini under the bus and backed the current leftist prime minister and his leftist-socialist coalition.
“Starting to look good for the highly respected Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Giuseppe Conte,” Trump said Tuesday on Twitter. “Represented Italy powerfully at the G-7. Loves his Country greatly & works well with the USA. A very talented man who will hopefully remain Prime Minister!”

This is who he just endorsed:
Remember when Italian PM Giuseppe #Conte was caught on camera colluding with Angela #Merkel, telling her how the #FiveStarMovement is trying sink #Salvini and to take in all the migrants Germany wants to send to Italy? pic.twitter.com/4dJ0IkcIMw

Salvini is currently in the midst of a crucial election where he could potentially become Prime Minister but Trump has thrown his support behind the leftist Prime Minister who is allying with socialists.
Italy, Termometro Politico poll:
LEGA-ID: 37% (+1)
PD-S&D: 24% (+1)
VERDI-G/EFA: 1% (-1)

I don’t know whether this will hurt Salvini’s chances or not but I doubt it will help.
The words of Paul Manafort talking with Steve Bannon after Bannon took over Trump’s campaign as described in Vicky Ward’s book “Kushner, Inc.” often run through my mind these days…
