Two-thirds of Ohioans aren’t worried that they will get the H1N1 virus and don’t plan to get vaccinated, a survey released yesterday shows.

However, the well-publicized vaccine shortages and long lines to get shots might be inflating that percentage, the pollster says.

“The current difficulty in obtaining vaccinations, and the media attention to that difficulty, may be leading people who would like to get the vaccination to say ‘no’ or ‘don’t know’ at this point in time,” said Eric Rademacher, co-director of the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research, which conducts the Ohio Poll.

“Some Ohioans have decided not to get the vaccination, while others aren’t planning to receive the vaccine because they don’t rank high on the priority list or have heard about the current scarcity of the vaccine.”

The survey shows that half are concerned that someone in their household will get the virus, which also is called swine flu. And 53 percent of those with children in their household plan to have them get flu vaccinations.

“Some parents have decided not to have their children vaccinated,” Rademacher said. “Others aren’t sure whether their children will receive the vaccine because they have heard about the current scarcity of the vaccine or have had difficulty getting the vaccine from their family doctor.”
