The US Army is taking steps to address mental health issues after it emerged that its soldiers are committing suicide at a rate of more than one every other day.

In the first three months of this year, 56 servicemen and women reportedly killed themselves. Twenty-two of those deaths have been confirmed as suicide, while 34 are still being investigated.

The number of troops attempting to commit suicide has skyrocketed since the invasion of Iraq, and is now at its highest level since records began.

In 2004, the year after the invasion, 64 soldiers killed themselves. By 2006, the figure had jumped to 102. The following year it rose again, to 115. Last year it was 140.

Officials have said troops are under tremendous and unprecedented stress because of repeated and long tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
