A suspected US drone attack has killed at least seven people in Pakistan’s troubled northwest near the tribal border with Afghanistan.

Eyewitnesses told Press TV that the drone fired two missiles into a house believed to be a hideout for Taliban militants in the Sarogha village of South Waziristan region on Sunday.

Local media quoted Pakistani security forces as saying that the seven killed in the cross-border strike were all ‘suspected militants.’

A local resident, Zafar Wazir, however, said that the two guided missiles hit the house of Akbar Wazir, killing at least ten people and injuring another 14, a Press TV reported said.

Zafar said the identities of these killed were not known, as a number of people had rushed into the house to help those inside before the second missile hits the building.

He added that some people were still trapped under the rubble and that the death toll could easily rise.

The latest drone attack on the Pakistani soil, allegedly launched from US bases in Afghanistan, comes as the issue continues to remain a major stain on the relations between Washington and Islamabad.

The imprecise operations have been criticized for their potential in claiming civilian casualties. The strikes have flamed anti-American Sentiment amongst the Pakistanis.

Islamabad, which formerly held a strong stance against the attacks, has changed the harsh rhetoric that the strikes were in breach of the country’s sovereignty amid reports that the US military ‘secretly informs’ Pakistani officials prior to the attacks.

The new director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, suggested Wednesday that the US would continue cross-border aerial attacks on Pakistan, despite the large number civilian casualties.

“Nothing has changed our efforts to go after terrorists, and nothing will change those efforts,” Panetta said in response to questions about the CIA drone attacks.
